Khodiyar Maa is a Hindu goddess born in and worshipped by the Charan caste. She has approximately 12-13 temples dedicated to her, and all temples have been rebuilt from original stepwell structures. The Charan caste are a renowned community spread across Gujarat, Rajasthan and Mumbai, and have characteristics that combine both Brahmins and Kshatriyas. There is an entire genre of literature known as Charan literature. The Dingal language exists because of this caste, since Charans used it to motivate troops in Rajput armies by praising the martial exploits of Rajput Charan war heroes. The construction of Khodiyar Maa temples has left little evidence of original stepwell structures, but effort has been made to document what is left of them.
